In the beginning, I had no intention of building a village. I simply wanted to create a place for myself in the countryside - the kind of place where I had spent my own childhood: away from the city, with waters for fishing and swimming, and forests to wander through or gather mushrooms.
Later, daily walks also became important to me, and I wanted to create a network of roads and paths where tree-lined trails could become peaceful walking routes.
I was tired of life in Riga, where I had just built a new private home, so I decided to make a radical change. I gradually began selling my businesses and invested the proceeds in carefully selected land about 80 kilometres from Riga - a hilly, overgrown area with marshy lowlands, where I saw the potential to shape a landscape.
Ponds and lakes were created, and the excavated soil was used to form the terrain. We planted it immediately so that the landscape would look as natural as possible. I designed the landscape myself and supervised the work - walking through the territory and imagining where the water, trees, roads and homes should be.
I designed the first homes myself, carefully adapting each one to its location so that it would have access to water, a beautiful view from the window and a sense of privacy in the garden.
I tried to shape every home site as if it were meant for me personally - with water nearby, a landscape opening through the windows, and an outdoor space that allows people to feel part of nature, not above it.
This is how Amatciems gradually grew from a personal idea into a place for people who want to live closer to nature without giving up comfort and well-developed infrastructure.
For me, Amatciems has never been just a project. It is my life’s work and my way of life.
